There are actually 4 telescopes in the SE series by Celestron. All of them are computerized telescopes; the 6SE can be considered mid-range, while 8SE is the most advanced in the series.
Both have literally the same features, share the same technologies, and they use the same type of power source. Some of the best features are SkyAlign, user-friendly handheld control, sky tour, and a large database of 40,000 observable objects.
They also have advanced optical coating technology, allowing the telescope to capture as much light as possible.
It is basically an automatic system that allows users to easily locate every observable object listed in the telescope’s database. It does require users to input date, time, location, and point the telescope at 3 bright objects, but everything is done by using the handheld control.
The telescope basically operates based on any command sent from the remote. You can even choose any observable object in the database with the remote control.
StarBright XLT Coating
The most basic function of a telescope is to capture as much light as possible and deliver images to the eyepiece. Both 6SE and 8SE telescopes are equipped with Schmidt-Cassegrain optical design, which has better focusing capability and wide field of view compared to Maksutov-Cassegrain variant.
They also have StarBright XLT Coating which dramatically improves performance and mirror reflectivity compared to the standard StarBright. The overall lights transmitted reaches more than 83.5%. In fact, the StarBright XLT is one of the finest coatings available today for telescopes.
The most expected feature from a scaled-down version of real telescope is portability. The Celestron NexStar 6SE and 8SE are not actually very small, they are tall when assembled, but it is good to know that the included tripod and the fork arm are detachable yet easily reassembled for easier storage.
Either 6SE or 8SE is powered by 8 AA batteries or a Celestron’s 12V power supply. The batteries and power supply are not included in the package.
Planetarium software called The Sky is included in the package. It is mainly a program to explore the Universe from PC. Every purchase also includes NexRemote which allows you to control your telescope from computer.
Every Celestron NexStar SE series telescope is protected by 2-years manufacturer’s warranty.
Celestron NexStar 6SE vs. 8SE
There are only few differences between 6SE and 8SE such as the lens size and weight. The difference in lens size, however, means that the bigger 8SE has better imaging capabilities.
NexStar 8SE has 203.2mm aperture and 2032 focal length, while 6SE only has 150mm aperture and 1500mm focal length. The highest useful magnification in 8SE reaches up to 480x, but 6SE does its best at 354x magnifications.
Lens size differences also make 8SE heavier at 33 lbs (including the tripod), while 6SE only weighs 30lbs (including the tripod). Although each of them has more than 40,000 observable objects, the 8SE provides slightly better options with the addition of 400 user-defined objects.
Moreover, this most advanced telescope in the SE series has more than 200 objects in the list with more complete information.
